Zakat Al-Fitr
Fitrah charity, also known as fitrah, is a charity that Muslims are required to give during the month of Ramadan. This charity is a form of zakat that every Muslim who fasts during Ramadan is obligated to give. The purpose of giving fitrah charity is to meet the needs of needy Muslims before the Eid al-Fitr and allow them to join in the joy of the holiday.
The Muslim who is responsible for fitrah is obliged to pay the fitrah of himself and the small children who have not yet reached the age of adolescence under his protection. There is no obligation for a person to pay fitrah for his or her parents, adult children, spouse, siblings, or other close relatives. However, if the person pays fitrah for these individuals without authorization, it is considered valid.
Today, when determining the amount of fitrah, the amount needed to meet the daily food needs of a needy person is considered an appropriate measure. This amount is determined based on the minimum wage amount that varies every year. In this way, needy individuals are helped to meet their basic food needs.
Fidyah
The compensation for fasting (Oruç Fidyası) is an obligation in our religion for those who cannot fast due to reasons such as old age or illness. In the Quran, it is stated: “Those who can’t fast will have to provide for the daily meals of a poor person instead” (Bakara, 2/184).
Those who cannot fast due to reasons such as illness or old age must pay a compensation for each day they cannot fast. This compensation replaces fasting. The amount of the compensation should be equal to the cost of one day’s basic food for a poor person. In addition, the compensation must be paid on the first morning of the Eid al-Fitr, starting from the sunrise. By giving this compensation to the needy, you can share their joy of the holiday.
By giving this charity, you can contribute to the fight against poverty and help promote social equality and justice. Therefore, giving compensation is not only a religious duty, but also an important behavior that provides social benefits.
